How Your Paint Can Affect Your Vehicle Wrap

Did you know your vehicle’s paint job plays a huge part in the quality of your car wrap? Well, it definitely does.

Our cars go through a lot of wear and tear from daily use. This includes not only the interior like the engine but also the exterior components like the bumper and paint. So, it’s no surprise that our vehicles will be greatly affected by the elements which can cause your paint to chip and peel. Well, if you are considering investing in a custom car wrap for your vehicle, it is very important to think about your paint. Although it will be covered with your custom vehicle graphic, your paint is quite possibly the most important aspect of keeping your car wrap looking like new.

Factory Paint vs. Touched Up or Aged Paint

When you purchase your vehicle brand new, it has a sparkly pretty coat of paint that is done by the factory. This paint is high-quality and is created to last and withstands the elements for years and years. But, if there is some extensive corrosion or damage done to your car, you may need to have your paint touched up. However, when it comes to the paint on your car, you need to know that all paint jobs are not the same. Although you can get a new paint job at any dealership nowadays it is very important to know that with aftermarket paint jobs, you need to do thorough research first. While there are several places that can properly execute an aftermarket paint job so it looks like factory work, there are also some paint jobs that just won’t. This is especially true if the price is too cheap.

So, why does it matter if your car has factory or aftermarket paint when doing a vehicle wrap? Poorly done aftermarket paints jobs work as the foundation of your truck or car wrap.  If we place your wrap on paint that is not of superior quality, more than likely it will peel or lift from your car when least expected. Similarly, if your car has aged paint that is showing signs of wear and tear, there is also a high probability that installing a custom vehicle wrap on it will result in it lifting or pulling off your paint completely.

The bottom line is that a good paint job (and expert car wrap professionals) is the key to a vehicle that will last!

How To Properly Maintain Your Car Wrap

Car wraps are an ideal, modernized method to market your business. Serving as an outdoor advertising avenue that really grabs the attention of your targeted customer. Like all marketing and advertising, it is an investment. However, unlike a billboard or a magazine ad, wrapping your business vehicle will require some maintenance on your part. Regular cleaning of your car wrap is required to maintain the overall appearance of the wrap as well as help prolong the life of the wrap.

Car Wrap Maintenance Tips

Below is a list of recommendations you should do when cleaning your car wrap.

Clean Your Wrapped Vehicle Every 2 Weeks

Vehicle graphics should be cleaned on a regular basis or whenever it appears dirty. However, ideally, a vehicle wrap should be cleaned every 2 weeks. This ensures that optimal visual appearance is maintained for the life of the wrap. Since PVC films behave similar to automotive paint, it will eventually degrade if left in constant contact with dirt, grime, and contaminants. This especially true if left unclean and exposed to UV light and/or heat.

Hand Wash

When hand washing, the first step is to pre-rinse the vehicle with clean water. This helps avoid scratching the surface. Start at the top of the vehicle and work down gently wash with a mild soapy water solution and a sponge. Avoid abrading the film surface with unnecessary scrubbing. When finished, rinse the wrap thoroughly with clean water. Allow the wrap to dry naturally or immediately use a silicone squeegee to remove water and then finish drying with a Chamois, microfiber towel or soft non-abrasive towel to avoid water spotting.

Automatic Car Wash

If you must use an automatic car wash, a brushless automatic car wash with just spray is acceptable. The automated brush wash is not recommended as the brushes may scratch the vinyl surface, catch and lift the edges of the vinyl wrap, and reduce the gloss finish. Also, skip the wax options at the car wash to avoid wax chemicals that which can damage the wrap like petroleum distillates. Once done, allow the wrap to dry naturally or dab dry with a microfiber towel.

Spot Cleaning & Difficult Stains

Spot cleaning surface contaminants like bugs, bird droppings, tree sap, and tar is required immediately after it appears, as it can stain and damage the PVC film. This is also true of gasoline and other fuels. Spot cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol and a clean non-abrasive rag is ideal.

Always Spot-Test Firstcolor change wrap installation

It is crucial to remember that chemicals can damage a car wrap. So, always test these solvents in an inconspicuous area prior to cleaning the wrap. You should also always rinse the surface with clean water following the use of any cleaning agent. Whatever chemicals you use, be sure they are free from abrasive components.

Be Mindful of Environmental Factors

In high elevations such as mountainous areas, the UV damage is increased versus exposure at sea level. Since the air is also thinner and there is less UV filtering, damage can be increased significantly.

If you live in a congested urban or industrial area, increased smog, pollutants and particulates in the atmosphere can also cause reduced durability on the horizontal areas of the wrap. The horizontal areas trap the chemicals on the surface of the material and the increased UV exposure results in shorter durability.
Vinyl films should also never be permanently submerged in water, fresh or salt.

Store Indoors or Under Cover Whenever Possible

Just like paint, vinyl car graphics become ruined by prolonged exposure to the sun and atmospheric pollutants, particularly on the horizontal surfaces such as the hood, trunk lid, and roof.

Whenever possible, it is best to store the vehicle in a garage or at least in a shaded area during the day. At night, the vehicle will need to be protected from dew or rain, which may contain acidic pollutants. When a garage is not available, consider using a cloth car cover at night.

Without properly maintaining your vehicle wrap, it can be a waste of money because if your graphics start to discolor or turn brown, you will need to remove the graphic from the vehicle to avoid staining the underlying paint.

Everything You Need to Know About Color Change Car Wraps

As the wrap business continues to grow, a small percentage of business has always been solid color change car wraps.  Aside from transforming your car into any solid color you can imagine, color change can do two things: protect your vehicle’s paint and revitalize an older car with minimal paint issues.

The History of the Color Change Car Wrap

Although the concept of car wraps is a relatively new one, color change wraps have a history of their own.

Matte Black Vinyl Wrap

The first “had to have” color option was matte black. Car wrap companies, such as SkinzWraps, were unable to get pre-made matte black from manufacturers. Instead, in order to make matte black car wraps available to our clients, we had to print black and use a matte laminate on top of the print. While this was effective for the times, it was very expensive as black is the most expensive color to print. But we did it, and it sold it often.

Satin Vehicle Wraps

The next generation was satin car wraps. When it was first introduced, the most popular colors were satin white, satin black, and satin red. The demand for satin color change wraps eventually grew to virtually every color. However, it still had to be printed first, which hindered production and development of the vehicle wrap product.

Other colors and effects soon followed, all still having to be made in house.

Vehicle Color Change Todaycolor change car wraps options

Fast forward 3 or 4  years – With the popularity of color change growing leaps and bounds, it developed a need for a simpler and easier process. Major vinyl manufacturers needed to create car wrap vinyl with premade colors for us to see. After a bit of research and development, they presented a few wonderful options for car wrap companies and their clients to choose from. Today, there are about 200 colors and texture variations. Everything from a carbon fiber car wrap to brushed aluminum, matte metallic, and even colored chrome is now possible, and in every color imaginable. Do you want a bubble gum pink Range Rover for you wife? It can happen with a color change car wrap.

Why color change my car?

People always ask, “why would someone pay to change the color of a car?”

There are two main reasons for color change:

  1. The “cool” factor: Who doesn’t want to stand out? Taking your car from ordinary to head-turning in just a few hours is an appealing concept. With endless possibilities for customization, you can create something that is one-of-a-kind. It’s not everyday that you see a shiny chrome car zoom down the highway.
  1. The “new car” feel: You may love your car but dislike the color. Unlike painting, which drops the resale value of a car, a color change custom car wrap actually protects your car while giving you the feeling of driving a new car.

Installing a Color Change Wrap   color change wrap installation

After selecting the color and finish for your vinyl wrap, the last part of the color change process is installation. This takes a bit longer than auto graphics because it must be installed seamlessly. A flaw, scratch, or bubble is much more visible on a solid color car wrap than one with graphics. The vehicle must be taken apart to get behind lights, door handles, and mirrors. Emblems can either be removed or the wrap can be applied on top of it.

Aggieland Outfitters RV Vehicle Wrap

Texas – home of bluebonnets, America’s football team, Beyoncé, and one of the most intense college rivalries in the nation. Anyone from Texas has been stuck in the middle of a debate between a Longhorn and an Aggie at least once, some more heated than others. At SkinzWraps, we know better than to pick a favorite. However, we recently had the pleasure of designing and installing a vinyl wrap for a Texas A&M fan shop in College Station.

RV Vinyl Wrap Graphics Design

Owned and operated by two A&M alum, Aggieland Outfitters prides itself on spreading Aggie spirit amongst other alumni, students, parents, children, and college sports fans, and doing so fashionably. When they came to us seeking a full auto wrap for their 2015 34’ RV, we wanted to make sure the vinyl graphics conveyed the pride they have in their school while highlighting their brand. Our in-house design team created a custom RV wrap with the distinctive Texas A&M school colors – maroon and white – making sure it stands out to Aggie fans on the road. The custom vehicle wrap design includes the name of the business, logo, website, and a statement of their partnership with Texas A&M Athletics.

Auto Wrap Printing & Installation

The Aggieland Outfitters team approved the design, the vinyl graphics were sent to our printing department. Like all of our car wraps, the design was printed in high-definition on our premium cast vinyl film, which is ideal for long-term outdoor signage. Finally, our installation experts carefully installed the vinyl wrap onto the RV. The result: a brilliant, high-resolution vehicle wrap that spreads Aggie pride on the road and at special events.

Benefits of an RV Wrap

For many people, an RV is a total eye sore. It’s large, bulky, and usually not very nice to look at. They take up so much space on the road and aren’t very fun to drive behind. However, as a car wrap company, we see huge advertising opportunity in recreational vehicles (literally). An RV provides a large canvas for vinyl wrap graphics. With so much space, we’re faced with very little limitations when it comes to both the design and installation of the auto wrap. It is quite literally a billboard on wheels – only unlike a traditional billboard, you can take your message to the public instead of waiting for the public to come to it.

RV Wrap Uses

No matter if you use your RV for business or pleasure, a custom car wrap is a great way to spread your message across the country.

Commercial Vehicle Wraps for RV

There are many types of businesses in various industries that use RVs for travel and/or to take their services on the road, including hospitals, bands, musicians, sports teams, and health screening clinics. If you’re using an RV to travel, you might as well take your brand with you. Your bold message will spread to every driver on the road with you as you roll down the highway to your destination. Of course, once you’re at your destination, your RV vinyl wrap will attract a lot of attention as well.

Personal RV Vinyl Wrapspersonal rv vehicle wrap

Many families invest in recreational vehicles as a comfortable method of transportation for road trips and mini vacations. Personalize your RV with a custom auto wrap that represents your family. Our design team will work with you to develop eye-catching, beautiful auto graphics that you and your family will love driving around in. Dallas Mavericks Devin Harris Jeep Car Wrap

Although we serve vehicle wrap clients all over California, New York, and Florida, our headquarters is deep in the heart of Dallas, Texas. Of course, that means that we are die-hard Dallas Mavericks fans. SkinzWraps had the pleasure of wrapping Mavs guard Devin Harris’ 2015 Jeep with a full car wrap. He wanted a color change from the standard white paint to matte metallic gray. It completely transformed the look of the vehicle, giving it a sleek, custom look. Although matte black wraps are one of the most popular color choice when it comes to vinyl wraps, the metallic gray is unique distinctly cool. We love that way that it turned out!

Color Change Car Wraps to Upgrade Your Car

Vehicle wraps have completely revolutionized the customizability of automobiles. Custom car wraps can convert your car from a common, everyday vehicle to a piece of art that will turn heads wherever you take your wheels. Color change wraps are a great way to make your vehicle stand out amongst the crowd.

 Paint-Safe Color Change Solutions

Whether you want to breathe new life into an old car you love with faded paint or just want to experiment with a new color, a solid color vinyl wrap upgrades a vehicle without the commitment or hassle of a paint job. Unlike a repaint, which could damage the original value of your car, an automotive wrap protects the painted surface. This is important if you ever decide to sell the car. It is also not permanent, which means that it can be easily exchanged with another wrap if you decide to try a different color down the road.

Customize Your Car with Color Car Wrap Options

Another benefit of wrapping a car is complete customizability. You can choose from an endless selection of incredible colors, as well as a variety of finishes. Many car wrap companies, such as SkinzWraps, can even match a color sample or swatch. Once you’ve decided on a color, you can begin to explore texture options. Depending on the final look that you desire, a vinyl car wrap can be made to have a glossy, matte, reflective, glow in the dark, chrome, pearl, or animal skin texture finish. Since all cars are normally covered in glossy paint, these textures turn even the most common car into a work of art that is distinguishable from every other vehicle on the road. Currently, the most popular wraps include camo car wraps, carbon fiber car wraps, chrome car wraps, satin black car wraps, and of course, matte black car wraps. Between color and finish options, you can personalize your vehicle wrap design however you’d like.

Do you love the matte metallic silver that we applied on Devin Harris’ car and want to see how it will look on yours? Have you though about upgrading your vehicle’s chipped and faded paint job to a new bright color? Or are you looking to turn your automobile into a billboard on wheels? Contact SkinzWraps today. Our award winning design team would love to work with you to create a one-of-a-kind look for your car, truck, or SUV.
